Harold Vernon Munson passed away on Sunday, October 19, 2008, in Rolla, Missouri at the age of 70. Harold was born on February 2, 1938 in Humboldt, Nebraska to Harold P. and Opal Mae (Lionberger) Munson. Vern, or "Popeye" as he was sometimes called, graduated from high school in Humboldt, Nebraska. Vern served in the Korean Conflict from 1952 until 1958 and four tours in Vietnam from 1967 until 1969. He earned seven Purple Hearts and the Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Overseas Bar, Drill Sgt. Badge, Silver Star and numerous other medals and honors. Vern completed his twenty-seven years of service with the Missouri National Guard and retired at the rank of Command Sergeant Major. Vern spent many years in the auto body profession. He was an instructor of Auto Body at the Rolla Area Vocational Technical School and worked as a Service and Parts Manager in various auto dealerships. Vern was a kind, generous and loving man always willing to help others. He enjoyed farming and he was proud of his cattle. He spent many hours watching his newborn calves romping and playing (maybe napping in the warm sunshine although he would never admit to it). He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He will be sadly missed by his surviving family which include: his mother, Opal Mae Munson of Humboldt, Nebraska; three sisters, Donna Gaddis of Mead, Nebraska, Faye Rhinehart and her husband, Dick, of Nebraska City, Nebraska and Wilma Stephens and her husband, Rasty, of Pawnee City, Nebraska; one brother, Lee Munson of Delphi, Indiana; special friends, Tom and Treasa Olsen; and many friends and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, his wife, Lucille, and a brother-in-law, Mark Gaddis. A funeral service for Harold "Vern" Munson will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2008, at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla, Missouri, with Reverend Leroy Nixon officiating.
